Trident Tips: Dealing with stress at university

Let’s face it: University is stressful. When your assignments are piling up, you have not returned your books to the library and you cannot remember the last time you had a good night’s sleep, this is when you know it is time to make a change. So here are some simple tips to try and help you alleviate your worries:

  1. Organise your time well

You need to ensure you are not becoming a night owl and staying in the library until the early hours of the morning. Make a timetable, scheduling in when your assignments are due, when you have classes, creating time to do your work, socialize, eat, sleep and just relax.

  1. Make sure you are getting enough sleep

Yes, we are all guilty of staying up until unruly hour’s binge watching our favourite Netflix shows but you need to ensure you are not depriving yourself of a good night’s sleep.

  1. Have some me time

It is a myth that university students should be spending all of their time with their head stuck in a textbook or typing an essay on a computer. You need to make some time in your schedule to just relax and do something you enjoy whether that be hanging out with friends, going to the cinema or just chilling to some music.

  1. Shut off before going to bed

You probably wonder why you lay awake for so long before you actually drift off to sleep. Are you allowing yourself to unwind before you go to bed? You need to allow your brain to switch off before you go to sleep. You cannot just finish an essay and expect to fall asleep straight away. Watch some tv, read a book or just do something peaceful before you go to sleep.

  1. Exercise!

Many people do not exercise whilst at uni and this due to them not having time. Even if you squeeze in 30 minutes a couple times a week you will release some of that stress you are feeling. Whether you play football, like going to the gym or doing a Zumba class you will feel the benefit of exercising. Healthy body, healthy mind and all that.

If you are really struggling and finding life too much to deal with just know that there is support out there ready for you to use. Firstly, all of your lecturers, tutors and course leaders are here to help. Set up a meeting with one of them so you can discuss your woes and they can give you advice or point you in the right direction for some additional help you may need.
