Pancake day is just around the corner, on the 28th of February to be exact. Pancakes are simple and quick to make, but toppings are the way in which you can really excite the taste buds.
American-style pancakes can be made by adding baking soda to the mixture which creates fluffier and even more irresistible pancakes. Or make some waffles. Or just whip up the classic pancake in the pan with an attempted flip.
- Maple Syrup and Strawberries
This simple and delicious combo is brilliant. It satisfies the sweet taste buds as well as making you feel as if you’re getting one of your 5-a-day too. You can also add chocolate, or whipped cream. The world is your oyster on Pancake Day!
Some meat on your pancakes is never a wrong move, it is easy and quick. Throwing on a few rashers of bacon on your pancakes will make all problems in life come together. And to top off this magnificent masterpiece, pour on some maple syrup.
- Honey and Banana
Pouring on some honey and cutting in some banana is a simple, and healthier, start to the day. It adds another different flavour to the usual pancake mix, you can always take out the banana and replace it with blueberries or any other fruit.
- Ice Cream
If you’re having pancakes so you might as well go hard or go home, and just scoop on the vanilla ice cream or chocolate. And pour on the Nutella, or any other suitable chocolate sauce alternative.
- Sweet It Out
It’s Pancake Day, so there is nothing stopping you from chucking on all the junk from the sweet cupboard onto the pancake layer(s). Jelly beans, minstrels, haribos, marshmallows, toffee, jelly babies, cola bottles, midget gems and the list goes on and on. Just dollop it all on, and top it off with a drizzle of Nutella.
- Peanut Butter Syrup
If you just mix ½ cup of honey or maple syrup with a ¼ cup of peanut butter and microwave it you have yourself a sauce to suffice all the taste buds!
Another ingenuous yet delightful topping is bound to make your mouth water. Dabbing on a spoonful of blueberry, blackberry, strawberry, cherry or any other yummy jam will fulfil all your desires. Go crazy and mix all the jams in, or add fruit; do whatever you want on Pancake Day!
- Warm apple Sauce
To make this you will have to mix a cup of cider and brown sugar in large saucepan. Set it over a medium heat and bring to boil. Then chop in the apples and let it simmer. Cook the apples whilst stirring for 10-12 minutes. Then add another 2 tablespoons of cider and cornstarch to make it slurry. Remove it from the heat once it thickens, and stir in vanilla. Voila! You have yourself a sauce which is somewhat healthier than some of the other options listed.
- Ricotta or any other soft cheese alternative
This is for the cheesecake lovers out there! This will transform ordinary pancakes into mouth-watering cheesecake pancakes, and you could even add the ricotta into the pancake mixture to make it even cheesier!
Plain yoghurt can be a lighter alternative to the sweeter options out there; but at the same time you could also dollop on the fruit yoghurts such as strawberry, blueberry, peach, lemon etc. Go bananas!
