Song Review: MNEK & Zara Larsson – ‘Never Forget You’

It’s incredibly frightening, and almost unnerving, to think that the combined age of these two young popstars doesn’t even reach that of the big-four-zero. But on the contrary, producer-come-artist MNEK and Swedish pop princess Zara Larsson – who are twenty and seventeen-years-old respectively – have both gathered a reputable CV between them already. Now, the underground dream team combine forces on their new single that’s almost certain to raise their profiles exponentially. It’s called “Never Forget You”, and it’s a banger.

Sweden’s answer to Jess Glynne, Larsson burst onto the Swedish music scene with her debut album, 1, placing her, coincidentally, in the number one slot at the age of just sixteen. Meanwhile, MNEK, having stayed relatively out of the limelight until now, provides production and background vocals for prestige-level artists such as Kylie and Madonna. His first break into the industry however, involved blessing us with the 2011 anthem “All Fired Up” by (lest we forget) The Saturdays at sixteen-years-old. Thank you MNEK.

“I used to be so happy but without you here I feel so low,” Larsson spills in the first three seconds. Angelically ascending in a powerful melody, she immediately gives herself a chance to showcase her pipes. The garage-pop track speaks for itself; remembering their love interest despite parting ways. As the song progresses, pianos and percussion ultimately draw to a climax that can only be described as ‘Where Are Ü Now’ 2.0. The Skrillex & Diplo-esque chorus is incredibly infectious and comes with enough bass to annoy neighbours five doors either side of you. The middle 8 is equally as delectable, featuring a call-and-response exchange between Larsson and MNEK, entwining their vocals seamlessly. “Feeling it / Loving it / Everything that we do,” pines Larsson to which MNEK responds, affirming that he “can’t hide his connection” with his love interest.

Already a hit in Scandinavia, the track is continuing to grow in the UK (and Down Under), with huge potential to become a bona fide worldwide hit. Even stateside stardom doesn’t seem completely out of the question. And hey, with both artists having a pretty slick track records, they are both destined to become behemoth popstars. As the song says, I certainly will not be forgetting them anytime soon.
