The time has finally come to begin gearing up for season six of Game of Thrones; time to start counting down the days, maybe even hours, until its premiere on April 24th. Although Game of Thrones has never been shy about leaving its main characters in absolute shambles, the season five finale was by far the worst single episode for almost every character who matters. And yes, we do remember the dreadful Red Wedding. After such a heart-wrenching finale last season, leaving us in the remote-throwing mood, it’s obvious that the season six premiere may be the most anticipated one yet. Let’s take a look at what we know so far.
After the betrayal of Jon Snow and what seemed to be his death in the final scene, we were left hoping he’d be resurrected in season six. Even after actor Kit Harington said: “I’m dead. I’m not coming back next season,” in an Entertainment Weekly interview, we still had hope. HBO had kept their lips sealed until the release of season six’s poster, which featured a bloody Jon Snow. Essentially, Game of Thrones has made things more confusing than they already are. The poster 100 per cent confirms that he will be back, yet how he survives is another question entirely. Did he simply survive the stabbing despite looking quite definitely dead? Or maybe Melisandre was right in implying he’s the true Lord of Light… I’m banking on Snow rising from the dead as a White Walker. Just me? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
We were also given a few shots in HBO’s end of the year promotional video and the first big teaser for the season. While there wasn’t much to grasp from the promo, the teaser gave us an eerie glimpse into the part Bran will play in season six. Most of the footage is stuff we’ve seen before, but it’s what’s new that makes us squirm in our chairs. The voice of the Three-Eyed Raven reminds us of how the past has already been written; then we hear Bran make the most ominous statement yet. We’ve missed Bran and the story of those North of the Wall in season five, but he will return and play a major role in the new season. After training with the Three-Eyed Raven, it is finally time for Bran to do his part in the fight that we’ve been anticipating for what seems like forever now. Jon Snow again plays a prominent part in the teaser, leaving us, again, to wonder what they have in store for him. Maybe it’s Bran who saves his half-brother Snow? Although it’s pretty obvious that Bran is key to the survival of Westeros, I am almost certain his fate may already be sealed. I wouldn’t put it past Game of Thrones to kill him off, heroically of course.
Now, just recently we have been gifted with the official season six trailer, and it’s one minute and 41 seconds of greatness. The fast-paced shots leave us overwhelmed with information, making us want to pause it every second so we don’t miss anything. But, let’s focus on the ones that stood out. The High Sparrow and his minions have only just begun their quest for justice, but now that Cersei has been released from their clutches (however shamefully), and Jamie is back, the Lannisters are sure to put up a fight as Cersei calls for “violence.” It still isn’t clear what is in store for Jon Snow, but we are shown his body not once, but three times throughout the short clip, only adding to the mystery. Bran’s back and in what seems like a vision of him meeting face-to-face with the King of the White Walkers, we get our first glimpse into his new and improved Sightly ways. This can only mean that season six will not disappoint, giving us everything we’ve been waiting for and then some. Only 24 days until its premiere, now all that’s left is to wait.
