Charles Mason, well-known for his performances as Marmaduke the Clown and his wide collection of exotic animals, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison after claims of sexual assault. The 65-year-old lured the young boys with cannabis and ginger wine before making them watch pornography and then engaging in sexual acts. The offences occurred between 1985-2001 when Charles lived in Turnford and Hoddesdon in Hertfordshire. As many as 18 accounts of indecent assault have been reported.
Mason was arrested in the summer of 2017 after a victim came forward and reported that he was sexually assaulted in a flat in Turnford when he was 12-13 years old during the 1980’s. Police officers worked with the NSPCC who helped further identify a further four victims – all aged 12-20 when the assault took place all those years ago.
Judge Marie Catterson said, “he exploited his position for his own gratification” and was found guilty on September 26th2018 at St Albans Crown Court. He appeared at court again on the 11thof October to receive a 20-year-long Sexual Harm Prevention Order upon his eventual release from prison.
Daniel Piper, an Investigating Officer Detective Constable said, “Mason used his position of trust as a child’s entertainer to abuse young boys. It was more than 30 years ago before one of the victims felt able to come forward and speak to police. His bravery led to us identifying more victims, arresting Mason and bringing him to justice.”
Mason continued to do exotic animal shows through his company “Impeyan Productions” until it closed down following his arrest.
