Five TV shows you NEED to binge watch on Netflix this summer

[Laura Noakes | Deputy Editor]

When you have finally recovered from the well deserved hangover after your final exam, you are going to have a lot of spare time on your hands. And what should you do with that spare time? Earn money? Socialise with friends? Be a productive member of society? NO. Instead you should curl up in your bed, draw your curtains and binge watch Netflix to make up for all of the time you were revising instead of watching TV. Here are my top picks for TV shows to watch this summer:

1. Orange is the New Black

ORANGE

If you haven’t watched Netflix’s break-out original series yet, catch up before series three goes live on June 21st. Orange is the New Black follows Piper, a middle class New-Yorker, who is sentenced to 15 months in prison for smuggling drugs for her ex-girlfriend, Alex, ten years earlier. The series also looks at other prisoners and their stories of how they ended up incarcerated. Orange is the New Black is darkly funny and full of dramatic tension – perfect binge-watching material!

2.  Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

kimmy

If you haven’t seen my raving review about Netflix’s latest original comedy, click here. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt follows Kimmy, a woman kidnapped and imprisoned in a cult for fifteen years. Upon her rescue she moves to New York City and begins her life. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is unfailingly positive and upbeat, and is sure to get you in a great mood for summer!

4. Buffy the Vampire Slayer

buffy

A cult classic, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a massive hit in the nineties. It follows Buffy, a ‘slayer’, who defeats vampires, demons and a variety of other evil beings as well as trying to fit in at high school. With the help of her friends Willow and Xander Buffy learns to control her powers and save the world. Buffy is a kick-ass female character and this TV show is GOLD!

4. Louis Theroux: LA stories

If you’ve finally recovered from your exams and are feeling a bit intellectual, why not catch up on a documentary? Louis Theroux is back on fine form in this excellent three part series examining three very different stories from Los Angeles. Louis examines life in LA for sex offenders, dog owners and people facing a terminal illness. Whilst this series is darker then Louis’s earlier stuff, his irrelevant yet poignant interview style really shines through on more difficult topics and his conclusions are as ever, insightful.

5. Orphan Black

If you are a massive Doctor Who fan, Orphan Black will be right up your street. A science-fiction show about cloning and its ethical implications, Orphan Black focuses on Sarah Manning, a con artist who witnesses a lady that looks exactly like her commit suicide. Soon Sarah discovers she is one clone of many others, created by a shadowy scientific institution named Neolution. With compelling characters, a twisty-turny main plot and a unique premise, Orphan Black is a must watch, if only for the brilliant Tatiana Maslany, who plays an incredible number of characters to absolute perfection.
So, in conclusion, summer needs to hurry the hell up so I can start re-watching all of these amazing shows! What are your top picks on Netflix? Let us know on Twitter @TridentMediaUK or on facebook.com/TridentMediaUK.
