The Athletic Union Judo Club competed at the University of Warwick Team Competition on Saturday 24th January 2015 where seven students were representing the University. Stephen Wond was fighting first in the individual under 66 kg category, and after a fantastic performance with four outstanding fights; he finished with his first Gold Medal since starting judo at the beginning of University. Przemek Paziewski also finished with a bronze medal in the individual under 81kg group.
Jonothan Gregory represented the university in his first ever judo competition in the under 73kg category with just four months of training under his belt, and managed to pull off some impressive throws. Stephen and Przemek were joined by Shaan Khan to make up the intermediate team and after some excellent performances and some tough fights, they made it through to the semi finals in which they narrowly lost, leaving them with a well deserved Bronze medal. Shaan fought particularly well, winning all of his fights with maximal points. Stephen, despite moving up weight category and already having fought four times already, also fought well!
David Down, Sam Sampson & Scott Burns made up the advanced team, and were joined by two representatives from Coventry Judo Club to fight in the heavyweight categories. A great team effort saw the team into the knock-outs. The Boys unfortunately lost to Coventry Judo Club (the eventual tournament winners), but finished in the third place position, awarding them with another bronze medal.
If you are interested in trying out Judo, we meet at De Hav Sports Village, 4-6pm on Monday Evenings. All Levels are welcome. Please contact the Athletic Union for further details.
