80s Fashion that’s making a comeback

By Leong Qi Tyng – Contributing Writer

“Style is very personal. It has nothing to do with fashion. Fashion is over quickly. Style is forever.”

    Ralph Lauren

I am no fashion expert but it’s easy to tell which fashion style is timeless. Fortunately for us, some ‘80s style are making a comeback. I think it’s fortunate because we get to experiment more with our clothes and look for inspirations from fashion icons of the time such as Madonna, Princess Diana, Michael Jackson, Jane Fonda and Joan Collins. The fashion styles in the ‘80s were famous for its excess in everything: colour, glitter, shoulders and hair! For women, it was power dressing as more were stepping up in their careers.

The ‘80s styles making a comeback are:

  • Denim Jackets

Popularized by James Dean, the denim jackets have been in and off style for years. The denim jacket went through numerous changes in terms of size and cut. One of the probable reasons why the jackets survived because they are versatile; they can be customized using button badges, paint or ironed on prints. In the 1970s, John Lennon wore a lot of denim jackets and it was still fashionable in the ‘80s, except it got baggier or oversized.

  • Mirrored Sunglasses

Sunglasses that could act as mirrors for the other person standing in front of you. Sounds real handy! Perhaps a good tool to check another person out discreetly (or not). Also, makes one look good with eyes protected from the sun’s harmful rays. Squinting isn’t a good look.

  • Pegged Jeans

I do that when jeans are too long for my legs. Who knew if you folded higher it becomes a fashion style? Apparently pegged jeans can make one’s legs look longer (or was it slimmer? Maybe both).

  • White Heels

Once considered garish, the white boots or pumps were, in fact, popular, and fronted by Cyndi Lauper. It became popular again when big fashion houses such as Isabel Marant and Celine created their own versions, which was copied by street style stars. Just don’t wear them to the clubs or bars, not worth it.

  • Wide Waist-Cinching Belts

Fashion houses such as Balmain and Isabel Marant modernized the belts and brought them back. I guess it gives an appearance of a smaller waist.

  • Sequins, sequins everywhere!

A girl in a sequined dress brushed pass me in the Forum, and I’ve got to tell you it hurt, a lot! This weaponized and glittery material are used by J. Crew, Balmain, and Jill Stuart. A tip from stylists is to pick a statement sequinned piece and keep everything else basic.

  • Shoulder Pads

Give em the shoulder. Shoulder pads came about when women wanted to ‘power dress’ at work, and it was made popular by Joan Collins in the show Dynasty. When I first saw jackets with shoulder pads in the store, I wasn’t sure if it’ll be a hit. Personally, I don’t think it’s a look that suits everyone, but Balmain incorporated shoulder pads into its 2016 line. The shoulder pads have been sported by the likes of Lady Gaga, Victoria Beckham, Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner. Like what Miranda Priestly of The Devil Wears Prada said, whatever is done by fashion houses will be followed by the people in the streets like us.

  • Gold Lamé

The gold colour can be tricky, even for silver. Too much it can look tacky, but at the right amount it looks good and stylish. A gold camisole such as the one by Karen Walker Spring-Summer 2016, or a wrap dress may look good for a night out.
